Description: Seminar in Microscopic Wood Identification For Conservators, Conservation Architects and those with an interest in timber identification to be held at GMIT Letterfrack, Co. Galway Friday 18th – Saturday 19th June 2010.

This intensive seminar, run over one and a half days, is designed to further your understanding of different timbers used on furniture and architectural joinery and the macroscopic and microscopic identification of a range of European wood species. The lectures combined with a variety of practical excercises will be delivered in a tutorial style. This short course is offered by ICHAWI in collaboration with GMIT Letterfrack and Connemara West. 

The seminar will be conducted by Dr. Angelika Rauch, art historian, cabinet maker and conservator/restorer of wooden objects. Angelika is a lecturer in Furniture Conservation and Restoration as well as Design and Technology Education with GMIT Letterfrack since 2002. 

Topics covered amongst others: 
• Basic wood anatomy 
• Macroscopic wood identification methods 
• Use of identification keys 
• Practical excercises in identifying timber using microscopes and sample slides 

Participants will have the opportunity to explore historic and current examples of exemplary furniture making through guided tours. 

COST: 150 Euros including coffees/teas/scones on both days as well as lunch on Friday. 
Places are limited to 12 participants so early booking is essential.

10.00 Introduction to wood anatomy of softwoods and hardwoods 
11.30 Coffee break 
11.50 Identification methods (macroscopic, microscopic) and use of identification keys 
12.30 Guided tour: Typical uses of timber on furniture and in architecture 
13.30 Lunch break (Soup and Sandwiches provided) 
14.30 Practical: Preparing timber for macroscopic wood ID (cutting different planes, using hand lenses for ID) 
16.00 Coffee Break 
16.20 Practical wood ID exercises 

Saturday 19th June 2010 

9.30 Practical: Microscopic ID aided by internet identification key 
11.00 Coffee Break 
11.30 Practical: Microscopic wood ID continued (including some exotic timbers if time allows) 
13.00 Lunch (optional) 

The aim of this workshop is to enable participants to identify a range of timbers using various examination tools including their sense of touch, smell and sight as well as aids such as magnifying glasses and microscopes. Theoretical knowledge will be applied in practical exercises. As the use of magnification tools is strenuous to the eyes, regular breaks are necessary. 

Please note: Participants can bring own samples of timber they would like to identify.
