Medieval colours: between beauty and meaning




An interdisciplinary conference on the study of colour in medieval manuscripts
10 and 11 September 2009

The conference will focuses on all issues of medieval colour, namely the technical studies and the history of manuscript illuminations. On one hand, the conference will explore the importance of medieval colour, starting with a key note lecture by Michel Pastoureau, and on the other, will examine significant developments of the study of medieval illuminations in Europe with the participation of invited speakers from England, France, Germany, Portugal and Spain: Mark Clarke, Claude Coupry, Doris Oltrogge, Luis Afonso and Joaquín Yarza Luaces. An optional workshop on the practice of medieval illumination will be organized (9 September). The topics presented will be of interest to conservators, curators, art-historians and scientists.
